As one of the fastest growing cities in the country, only 15 percent of the city’s 640 square miles of planning area is currently developed. The undeveloped areas of Buckeye are home to a wide range of wildlife including mule deer, big horn sheep, desert tortoises, bobcats, etc.

To ensure Buckeye is balancing its fast-paced growth with our natural desert habitat, the city is creating one of the region’s first-ever Wildlife Corridors Best Practices Guide. Wildlife corridors link at least two habitat areas together by allowing animals to move freely between them. When completed, the Best Practices Guide will provide the city with the proper tools for planning future development that balances growth, the natural environment and wildlife corridors.

The Wildlife Corridors Best Practices Guide is part of the city’s Imagine Buckeye 2040 General Plan overwhelmingly approved by voters in 2018. To learn more about the city’s General Plan, please visit buckeyeaz.gov/generalplan.
