In January 2023, the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) released the Hassayampa Sub-basin Groundwater Model report. The report stated the Hassayampa sub-basin is 15-percent short in the amount of water that will be needed in order to meet the 100-year Assured Water Supply (AWS) Program.
We currently have the water resources available to sustain our existing customers and the projected growth that already have Certificates of Assured Water Supply (CAWS) issued by ADWR. Buckeye's water future is secure and the amount of CAWS already issued will support another 20-25 years of growth.
The Water Resources Department is working closely with future developments to implement ways that Buckeye can meet our economic goals while managing current and future water supplies.

Up to now, Buckeye has primarily relied on groundwater as its source for water. To meet future water demands, Buckeye is working to find water from different sources, not just groundwater.
Currently, Buckeye has an annual allocation of Colorado River Water, a renewable supply, of approximately 2,786 acre-feet (907 million gallons) per year. However, since the Colorado River is operating in drought conditions and cutbacks are being implemented, this could impact the amount of water we receive from the Colorado River in future years.
Each year, Buckeye recharges approximately 2,500 acre-feet of reclaimed water. As we grow, the amount of reclaimed water will increase. This will allow Buckeye to put more back into the aquifer or use for non-potable water users, such as schools or HOAs. The more reclaimed water we use, the less water we would need to take from the aquifer (groundwater).
In February of 2023, the Buckeye City Council approved a purchase agreement for one-acre of land in the Harquahala Valley. The land comes with a water right equivalent to an allocation of 5,925 acre-feet (1.9 billion gallons) of water per year for the next 100 years.
